introducinginnovation: Laura Swales, 20. BA Fashion Communication and Promotion, NTU. Re-defining my perspective on the term ‘red-head’ since 2009, Laura Swales is about to graduate from her three year degree at Nottingham Trent University. Despite prevailing interests in areas other than fashion, Laura says she was initially drawn to the course. ‘I had an interest in fashion and thought I’d love to pursue a career in fashion business. Notice the ‘had’ in the last sentence, through the course I learned that fashion was not a true love in my life. This didn’t dampen my enthusiasm to continue with the degree as we worked with a wide range of exciting brands.’ Not one to be accused of lacking initiative, by adapting and cooperating with the university she found ways to make the course work for her. ‘Despite my heart not being in fashion, the course briefs have always been open to personal interpretation and course leaders encouraged us to create projects that pulled on our personal strengths.’ With no intention of peaking at graduation, Laura plans on utilising the proverbial tools she has gained whilst studying( book in one hand, sausage roll in the other) and maximising the profits of the investment she made in education. ‘I can no confidently present ideas in front of large crowds and come up with innovative solutions in areas such as marketing and branding. I plan to take forward what I’ve learnt in terms of marketing and carve out a career for myself. Ideally I’d love to work within the music industry, but I am always open to new ideas.’ Laura will finish her degree in June.
